The Piazza del Nettuno was laid out in 1564 to show off the statue it is named after. The statue was made between 1563 and 1567 by the Flemish sculptor Jean de Boulogne, known as Giambologna, with Tommaso Laureti. To open the square, a block of buildings between the Palazzo d'Accursio and the Palazzo del Podestà had to be demolished. The Sala Borsa library stands on one side and the Palazzo Re Enzo on the other.
