The collection spans two levels and follows a chronological route covering about 400,000 years of history. The rooms go from prehistory and the Gallo-Roman period to the Middle Ages, then to Bordeaux in the 18th century, with its Atlantic trade and slavery, and to the 19th century and the region today. Key objects include the Venus of Laussel, the Garonne Treasure and the cenotaph of Michel de Montaigne. A sensory route lets visitors touch replicas of works.
