In 1137 the cathedral hosted the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future Louis VII of France. The 12th-century bell tower was too weak to carry the bells, so a separate tower, the Pey-Berland Tower, was built in 1440. An 11-tonne bell was hung there in 1853, and a statue of Notre-Dame d'Aquitaine was placed on top in 1863. The tower rises 50 metres and has 233 steps.
