The theatre was built after an earlier theatre near the Grosse Cloche was destroyed in 1755, and it opened in 1780 with Racine's Athalie. The west facade has a peristyle of twelve Corinthian columns and a balustrade with twelve statues: nine muses and three goddesses. Inside, the circular dome has a ceiling fresco by Claude Robin, and the blue, white and gold colours echo the opera house at Versailles. The guided visit covers the exterior, the vestibule, the grand staircase and a view of the auditorium from a box.
