The square was laid out in the 19th century where the Château-Trompette fortress stood until it was destroyed in 1818. Its name comes from the way the trees are planted. The Monument aux Girondins, built between 1894 and 1902, is a column topped by a figure of liberty. At its base two groups of bronze horses face different ways: one towards the Grand-Théâtre, for the triumph of the Republic, and the other towards the Jardin Public, for the triumph of Concord. A funfair, the Foire aux plaisirs, takes over the square in spring and autumn.
