The square was planned from 1720 by the Intendant Boucher with the architect Jacques Gabriel, and built between 1735 and 1755. The Fontaine des Trois Grâces has stood at its centre since 1869. The Miroir d'eau opposite, inaugurated in 2006, is a granite slab of about 3,450 square metres covered by a layer of water about 2 cm deep, with fog released by roughly 900 injectors.
