What stretches or shortens Bruges

Bruges is compact, and what shapes the plan is the calendar more than the distances. Groeningemuseum and the Sint-Janshospitaal close on Mondays, the Gruuthusemuseum on Wednesdays, and the Brugse Vrije opens only at weekends. The Belfry is the busiest sight and Musea Brugge recommends booking it online. In winter the Belfry opens at 10:00 on weekdays, and most museums stop admitting visitors 30 minutes before closing at 17:00. The Groeningemuseum closes on 11 January for a four-year refurbishment, so a visit now is the last one for some years.

Common questions

Is one day in Bruges enough?

One day covers Markt, the Belfry, Burg, the Basilica of the Holy Blood and one or two museums if you start at opening time. A second day lets you add the Groeningemuseum, the Sint-Janshospitaal, the Gruuthusemuseum and the Begijnhof without rushing. Check closing days first, since the museums are closed on Mondays or Wednesdays.

Do I need to book in Bruges?

Musea Brugge recommends booking in advance for busy locations such as the Belfry, and tickets are sold online and at the desk. For the brewery, check the booking page for tour times. Most other stops can be visited with a ticket bought on the day.

Is Bruges walkable?

Yes, the centre is small and the main stops are close together, while the Begijnhof, Minnewater and the brewery lie on the south side. A single De Lijn ticket costs 3 euros and a day ticket costs 9 euros. A day ticket costs the same as three single rides.

What is the best time of year to visit?

May to September has the mildest weather, with average highs of about 18 to 23 degrees. Rain is spread through the year, with about 10 rain days a month in summer and 12 to 15 from October to January. In winter the Belfry opens at 10:00 on weekdays and the days are short.
