The great mosque of Córdoba was begun in the 8th century and extended over the following two centuries. After 1236 it became a church, and in the 16th century a cathedral nave was built right in the middle of the hall. You walk through the Patio de los Naranjos, then the columned hall with its striped arches, the mihrab and the Christian chapels. The contrast between the two buildings in one space is the point of the visit.

Tip
The free morning visit (Monday to Saturday, 8:30 to 9:20 entry) does not admit groups, so the hall is quieter than later in the day. Come for the first look, then return later if you want a guide.
