King Alfonso XI built the fortress in 1328, and the Catholic Monarchs later used it as a base, which gave it its name. Inside there are courtyards, a hall with Roman mosaics, towers with views over the river and the Roman Bridge, and gardens with ponds and fountains. The rooms are quick to see, so most of the time goes on the towers and the gardens.
What to look for
- The hall of Roman mosaics
- The climb up the towers
- Gardens with ponds and fountains
