In 1558 Cosimo I had the square remodelled, and the work was carried out by Giorgio Vasari, who joined older buildings into more balanced facades. The Palazzo della Carovana dates from 1562 to 1564, and the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri from 1565 to 1569. The Palazzo dell'Orologio was a prison, and Count Ugolino della Gherardesca died there in 1288. A statue of Cosimo I by Pietro Francavilla stands in the centre.
