The Romans built the aqueduct to bring water into the town, and its granite blocks are laid without mortar. It is at its tallest where it crosses Plaza del Azoguejo, at the foot of the old town. The old town and the aqueduct form one World Heritage site. The visitor reception centre is in the same square, and the Aqueduct Interpretation Centre is part of the Casa de Moneda ticket.
