The name comes from an Arabic word for a market of animals, and the square has been the meeting point of Toledo since the Middle Ages. Arcades run along one side and cafés fill the edges. Tourist train tickets are sold here and the street up to the Alcázar starts at one corner. It is also the easiest landmark for finding your way back.
