The Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, founded the monastery in the late 15th century to mark a victory and as a possible burial place. The church has a single wide nave with heraldry on the walls, and the cloister is among the finest in Spain, with carved arches and gardens. The chains hung outside are a reminder of the captives freed after the conquest of Granada. The visit is short and easy to pair with the nearby synagogues.
What to look for
- The two-storey cloister and its carved arches
- Royal heraldry in the church
- The chains of freed captives on the outer wall
- Views toward the Tagus from the surrounding street
