What stretches or shortens Amsterdam
Distances are small, but timed tickets decide how a visit goes. The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House each need a booked time slot, and Anne Frank tickets go on sale six weeks ahead. The museums take up most of a day each, while the canals, the Jordaan and Vondelpark fit in between. Trams and walking cover nearly everything, and the A'DAM Lookout needs a short free ferry across the IJ.

Is one day in Amsterdam enough?
One day covers a canal walk and one or two major sights, for example the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum with a booked slot. You will have to choose, because the Anne Frank House and both big museums each take a large part of a day.
Do I need to book Amsterdam museums in advance?
Yes for the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, which all require a time slot. Anne Frank tickets are sold online only, released every Tuesday for a visit six weeks later. The Heineken Experience and NEMO also use timed tickets and fill up at busy times.
How long do you need at the Rijksmuseum?
The museum says you can see the highlights in about an hour, but the collection is large. We plan about three and a half hours, including queue and security.
