The centre is compact, and walking is the best way to see the canal ring, the Jordaan and the Nine Streets. Trams and the metro cover the longer distances, and free ferries cross the IJ from behind Centraal Station to Amsterdam Noord. A GVB day ticket gives 24 hours of unlimited rides and pays off from about three separate trips.
