The Jordaan was built in the 17th century as a district for workers and newcomers outside the canal ring, and its streets are narrower and quieter than the grand canals. Today it has small galleries, brown cafes and courtyard almshouses behind street doors. There is no fixed route, so you can follow the side canals and look into the shop windows. Saturday brings a farmers' market to the Noordermarkt.
What to look for
- The courtyard almshouses behind the street doors
- The Egelantiersgracht and Bloemgracht canals
- The Noordermarkt farmers' market on Saturday
- Small galleries along the side streets
Opening hours
Always open.
