Anne Frank and seven others hid in the secret annex of this canal house from July 1942 until they were arrested in August 1944. You walk through the front house and then into the annex behind the bookcase, in a one-way route with no room to stop. The rooms are mostly empty, and the museum uses diary extracts and objects to explain what happened. A visit takes about an hour.

What to look for

  • The revolving bookcase that hid the entrance
  • Anne's room with the pictures she pasted on the wall
  • The pencil marks of the girls' growing heights
  • Anne's original diary
