Dam Square is where the Amstel was dammed in the 13th century, which gave the city its name. It is now the central square, with the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the National Monument, a memorial to the Second World War. There is nothing to book, and most people cross it on the way to somewhere else. Expect street performers and pigeons.
