Canal Ring
The three main canals, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, form a UNESCO-listed arc of 17th-century houses. Walking a stretch with side trips over the bridges is the simplest way to see Amsterdam.

The canal ring was dug in the 17th century, when Amsterdam grew rich from trade, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht curve around the old centre, lined with tall narrow houses and crossed by small bridges. There is no ticket or route, so you can walk a stretch, stop for a coffee and leave when you like.
