The Begijnhof was founded in the 14th century as a home for beguines, women who lived a religious life without taking the vows of nuns. The houses around the courtyard date from the 17th and 18th centuries, but 18 of them still have a Gothic timber frame behind the facade. One wooden house remains, and the Begijnhof chapel and the English Reformed Church stand on the lawn. People live here, so the visit is a quiet walk around the courtyard.
