May, June and September give mild days and long light without the peak crowds. July and August are warm and busy, and December fills up with visitors for the Christmas markets. January and February are cold and grey, which suits museums better than walking tours.
Spring starts cold: April highs sit around 15 degrees and May around 20, with showers that pass quickly. Parks turn green in April and cafes put chairs outside.
What to wear: Pack layers, a light waterproof jacket and shoes that cope with wet pavement.
Summer
13 to 24 °C · about 13 rainy days a month
Summer days run 23 to 25 degrees, with long evenings and light until late. July and August are the busiest months, and parks and lakes fill up at weekends.
What to wear: Wear light clothes, a hat and sunscreen by day, and carry a thin layer for evenings by the river.
Autumn
6 to 14 °C · about 14 rainy days a month
September stays pleasant at around 20 degrees, October cools to about 14 and the days shorten quickly. Museums are quieter once the school holidays end.
What to wear: Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket, and closed shoes from October.
Winter
-2 to 4 °C · about 15 rainy days a month
Winter highs are 3 to 5 degrees and nights fall below freezing. Snow is possible but not reliable, and daylight is short. Christmas markets run through December.
What to wear: Wear a warm coat, hat and gloves, and boots with grip for icy pavement.
If it rains
Rain is spread across the year, so keep an indoor option for each day. The Neues Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Topography of Terror and Berlin Cathedral all work in wet weather, and so does Charlottenburg Palace. Views from the TV Tower and the Reichstag are poor in low cloud, so save them for a clearer day.
Summer afternoons can reach 25 degrees, and there is little shade at the Holocaust Memorial, along the East Side Gallery and on Pariser Platz. Put those stops in the morning or early evening, and use museums or the cathedral in the middle of the day. Carry water, and use the Tiergarten when you need shade.
