Currywurst

A sliced sausage with curry ketchup and a bread roll, eaten standing up at a snack stand. It is the standard quick lunch and works at any hour.

Döner kebab

Meat shaved from a spit into bread with salad and sauce. The Berlin version has a strong claim to be the origin of the street food, and stands serve it late into the night.

Berliner Pfannkuchen

A jam filled doughnut that Berliners call a Pfannkuchen, found in every bakery. It is eaten fresh in the morning and on New Year's Eve.

Eisbein

A pickled and boiled pork knuckle served with sauerkraut and pea puree. It is heavy food for a cold evening in a traditional pub.

Königsberger Klopse

Veal meatballs in a white caper sauce, served with boiled potatoes. It is a classic home dish that old Berlin restaurants still list.

Berliner Weisse
