The beguines were lay women who lived a pious and celibate life, and for centuries the beguinage has been home only to women. Today it houses single women from Bruges and a few women with a religious vocation. UNESCO recognises the site as World Heritage, and the city asks visitors to keep silent and respect it. It lies on Wijngaardplein.
