Calouste Gulbenkian was an oil businessman who lived in Lisbon at the end of his life, and his collection became the museum when the foundation opened it in 1969. The rooms run in order from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia through the Islamic world and the Far East to European painting, sculpture and jewellery. The collection is moderate in size, so a visit can be done properly in a couple of hours.

What to look for

  • The René Lalique jewellery room
  • Islamic ceramics, carpets and manuscripts
