A large riverside square framed by yellow arcades, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. The Rua Augusta arch leads from it into the grid of Baixa.

This was the site of the royal palace until the 1755 earthquake destroyed it, and the square was laid out again afterwards as the main gateway to the city from the river. A bronze statue of King José I stands in the middle. Yellow arcades enclose three sides, and the fourth is the water, with stone steps going down to the Tagus.
