The hill has been fortified since long before the Christian conquest of Lisbon in 1147, and the walls you see mostly come from the Moorish and medieval periods, with 20th-century restoration. Inside the gate are gardens, a small archaeological site and a ring of towers joined by wall walks. The castle is mainly a viewpoint: the terraces look over Baixa, the river and the 25 de Abril bridge.
What to look for
- The wall walks and towers
- Terrace view over Baixa and the river
