The museum fills a former general hospital, the Sabatini building, and became the national museum of modern art in the 1980s. It covers Spanish and international art from the late 19th century to the late 20th century. Guernica has its own room on the second floor, with Picasso's studies for it nearby. The collection is arranged by theme and era over several floors, and the glass lifts on the facade are easy to spot.
