Sits between the Prado and the Reina Sofía with a collection that runs from early Italian painting to the 20th century, including Impressionists and Expressionists. It is smaller than its neighbours, and the museum suggests about two and a half hours.

The collection was put together by the Thyssen-Bornemisza family and came to Spain in the early 1990s. The visit starts on the top floor with early Italian and Flemish painting and works down through the centuries to the 20th century. It covers Impressionism, Expressionism and early American painting, which fills gaps left by the Prado and the Reina Sofía. The rooms are smaller than at its neighbours, so the visit feels easier.
What to look for

- The Impressionist and post-Impressionist rooms
- The German Expressionist rooms
