Munich by season

Spring

5 to 15 °C · about 15 rainy days a month

Highs rise from about 10 degrees in March to 19 in May. Rain falls on 14 to 16 days a month, so showers are common. Beer gardens start to open as the weather improves.

What to wear: Layers, a waterproof jacket and shoes that can take wet cobbles.

Summer

14 to 24 °C · about 16 rainy days a month

Highs reach 23 to 25 degrees and evenings stay mild. Rain falls on 15 to 17 days a month, often as short storms. This is the main season for beer gardens and river swimming.

What to wear: Light clothes, a hat and sunscreen, plus a thin rain layer for sudden showers.

Autumn

6 to 14 °C · about 14 rainy days a month

September still reaches about 20 degrees, while October falls to about 15 and November to about 8. Mornings are cool and crowds fall after Oktoberfest ends. Leaves colour the parks in October.

What to wear: A medium jacket, layers and an umbrella. Add a warm hat in November.

Winter

-1 to 5 °C · about 15 rainy days a month

Highs sit between 4 and 6 degrees, with night lows just below freezing. Rain or snow falls on 14 to 17 days a month. Days are short, but museums and Christmas markets fill the gap.

What to wear: A warm coat, gloves, a hat and boots with good grip.

If it rains

Rain falls on 14 to 17 days a month in every season, so a wet day is likely at some point. The Residenz, the Deutsches Museum, the Alte Pinakothek, the BMW Museum and the NS-Dokumentationszentrum all keep you indoors, and the churches are free. Put the English Garden, Nymphenburg's park and the Olympiapark on a dry day.

The rainy-day plan for Munich

If it is hot and sunny

Summer highs average about 25 degrees, and heat waves can push well past that. Plan open air sights early or in the evening, and use the Deutsches Museum or the Alte Pinakothek in the middle of the day. The English Garden and the beer gardens under chestnut trees have shade, and the Isar offers a place to cool off.
