What stretches or shortens Munich
The old town is small enough to cross on foot in about 20 minutes, so distance is rarely the problem. Time goes on the large collections: the Deutsches Museum alone can fill most of a day, and the Residenz, the Alte Pinakothek and Nymphenburg each need half a morning or more. Mondays cut the list, because the Alte Pinakothek, the BMW Museum and the NS-Dokumentationszentrum are closed, and the Viktualienmarkt stalls are shut on Sundays. Nymphenburg and the Olympiapark lie on the edge of town, so group them by area to save time on the U-Bahn and tram.
Common questions
Is one day in Munich enough?
One day covers Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, the Viktualienmarkt and one major museum if you start early. It leaves out Nymphenburg, the English Garden and the Olympiapark. A second day lets you do the Residenz and a park at an easier pace.
Which days are the museums closed?
Many close on Mondays. The Alte Pinakothek, the BMW Museum and the NS-Dokumentationszentrum are shut that day, while the Residenz, the Deutsches Museum and Nymphenburg are open daily. Monday suits the old town, the markets and the parks.
When is the best time to visit Munich?
May, June and October have mild weather and shorter queues. July and August are busy and warm, and September is crowded with Oktoberfest visitors. December brings the Christmas markets and cold weather.
Can I visit Neuschwanstein as a day trip?
Yes. The castle is outside the city in the Alpine foothills, and organised trips by train leave Munich in the morning. Allow most of a day and book ahead in summer.
