The basilica was built on the Butte Montmartre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The nave is free to enter, and the white domes show from many parts of the city. The steps in front are the best-known viewpoint in the district, and the hill around them is full of narrow streets. The dome climb is a separate visit up a narrow stair.

What to look for

  • The view over Paris from the front steps
  • The large mosaic above the altar
  • The streets and stairs of Montmartre behind the basilica
  • The funicular, as an alternative to the steps
