Charles Garnier designed the opera house, which opened in 1875. The self-guided visit follows the grand staircase, the foyers and the library-museum, and the red-and-gold auditorium when it is open. Marc Chagall painted the ceiling of the auditorium in 1964. The official site gives about an hour and a half for the visit, and tickets are sold online only.

In October entry runs from 10:00 to 16:00 and the building closes at 17:00. Hours are longer in summer. Rehearsals and daytime performances can close the auditorium, and sometimes more.

Tickets and booking
Adult ticket €25. The adult ticket is €25 for visitors from outside the EEA and €15 for EEA residents and nationals. Children aged 12 and under enter free.
Book online before you go. The official site says visit tickets are not sold on site.
Getting there
Opéra on Métro 3, 7 and 8 is at the front door, and Auber on RER A is a few steps away.
