May and September are the safest months: warm days, light rain and fewer people than in high summer. April works if you accept some showers. June is pleasant but São João on 23 and 24 June fills the city, and July and August are the busiest. From November to January it rains on 12 or 13 days a month.
Highs of 17 to 20 degrees and about ten rainy days a month in March, April and May. The gardens are green and the queues are shorter than in summer.
What to wear: A light waterproof jacket, layers, and shoes with grip for wet cobbles.
Summer
16 to 24 °C · about 4 rainy days a month
Highs of 23 to 25 degrees, little rain and the busiest streets. The sea breeze cools the evenings, especially near the river and in Foz.
What to wear: Light clothes, sun cream, and a thin layer for the wind on the bridge after dark.
Autumn
12 to 21 °C · about 10 rainy days a month
September is warm and fairly dry. From October the rain returns, with about eleven wet days in October and thirteen in November.
What to wear: Layers and a waterproof jacket, and by November pack for rain on most days.
Winter
7 to 15 °C · about 12 rainy days a month
Highs of 14 to 15 degrees and lows of 6 to 7, with 10 to 13 rainy days a month. The streets are quiet and snow is not a concern.
What to wear: A warm waterproof coat, closed shoes with grip, and an umbrella that handles wind.
If it rains
Rain is common from October to March. Granite cobbles and tiled steps get slippery, so shoes with grip matter more than an umbrella. Indoors, the Bolsa tour, the Clérigos museum, Livraria Lello, São Francisco, the Sé cloister, the Soares dos Reis museum, the Bolhão market and Serralves all work. The cellars in Gaia are dry and fit a wet afternoon.
Heat is moderate. Days above 30 degrees are few, about thirteen in a year at the airport station. On a hot afternoon, put the cellars and museums in the middle of the day and keep Ribeira and the bridge for the morning or the evening. The upper deck of the bridge has no shade.
