The gate has Muslim origins, with remains from that period in its inner part. Charles V and Philip II had it rebuilt, to plans by Alonso de Covarrubias, giving it the large coat of arms seen today. Two round towers frame the central arch. The gate is free to see and takes only a few minutes.
