What stretches or shortens Venice
Venice is small on the map and slow on the ground. Most journeys are a walk over steps and bridges or a vaporetto that stops at every landing, so crossing the city takes longer than the distance suggests. St Mark's Basilica admits visitors by booked slot, the Doge's Palace and the Accademia are better with advance tickets, and several museums close on Monday or Tuesday. The headline sights sit within a few hundred metres of each other and one dense morning can cover them. The districts west of the Rialto reward a second and third day with painting, churches and quiet waterfront.
Common questions
Is one day in Venice enough?
One day covers St Mark's Square, the basilica, the Doge's Palace and a ride on the Grand Canal if you book the basilica ahead. You will miss the Dorsoduro museums and the quieter districts of San Polo and Cannaregio. Walking is slow because of the bridges, so keep the plan tight.
Do I need to book St Mark's Basilica?
Yes. Tickets are named and entry is only in the slot you book, with five minutes of tolerance. The Doge's Palace and the Accademia recommend booking too, and the Accademia is closed on Mondays.
Is the vaporetto pass worth it?
A single ticket is valid for 75 minutes on the whole network, and the 24 hour pass is cheaper from about the third separate ride. Line 1 along the Grand Canal doubles as a sightseeing ride. If you stay between St Mark's and the Rialto, walking is often as quick.
Which days are bad for sightseeing in Venice?
No day is fully clear. The Accademia is shut on Monday, and the Peggy Guggenheim and Ca' Rezzonico are shut on Tuesday. On Sundays the basilica opens at 14:00 and the Frari at 13:00, so Sunday morning is the weak spot. The Doge's Palace is open every day.
