As Athens grew in the Roman period, this market replaced the older Agora as the city's trading square. You walk round a rectangular court of columns and foundations, with the Tower of the Winds on the east side. The octagonal tower has carved figures of the eight winds and once held a water clock. An Ottoman mosque, the Fethiye Mosque, stands in the grounds.
