The Brugse Vrije was an independent administrative and judicial district of the County of Flanders from the 12th century, based at Burg. You enter the courtroom via the old assize court. The huge mantelpiece of 1528 in oak, marble and alabaster, designed by Lanceloot Blondeel, honours Emperor Charles V. The building also houses the city records office, and only the aldermen's chamber belongs to the museum.
