The museum opened in 1890 and holds Ireland's main archaeological collection. The domed entrance hall leads to rooms on prehistoric gold, early Christian metalwork and the Viking period. The famous objects include the Ardagh Chalice, the Tara Brooch and St Patrick's Bell. There are also displays on ancient Egypt and on the bodies preserved in Irish bogs. A visit usually takes an hour and a half.

Getting there
The St Stephen's Green stop on the Luas Green line is about eight minutes on foot, and Pearse station is a ten minute walk.
Tip
Start with the gold room and the Treasury, then move on to the bog bodies and the Viking floor, so the best objects come while you are fresh.
