Data checked on October 5, 2026

The park covers more than 700 hectares to the north-west of the centre and was founded as a royal deer park in the 17th century and has been open to the public since the 18th century. A long main road crosses it, and paths run past the Wellington Testimonial, the Papal Cross and the residence of the President. A herd of fallow deer lives in the grounds, and Dublin Zoo lies on the south side. The park is large, so choose one end rather than trying to walk it all.

What to look for

  • The fallow deer herd
  • The Wellington Testimonial, one of the tallest obelisks in Europe
  • The Victorian walled garden at the visitor centre
  • The long straight road and open meadows

Tip

Cycling is a good way to cover the park, and the fallow deer are easiest to see in the early morning.
