    Edinburgh Castle

    Booking advised

The fortress on the volcanic rock at the top of the Royal Mile, with the Scottish crown jewels, a medieval chapel and the One O'Clock Gun. Expect queues at the gate and for the crown jewels, and long ramps between the sections.

Be at the gate when it opens and head straight for the crown jewels, then work back through the rest while the groups build.

Tickets often sell out well ahead in summer and once the online slots are gone there is no walk-up supply. Book a dated ticket online before you travel.

From 1 October to 23 December the castle opens at 09:30, last entry is at 16:00 and it closes at 17:00. From 1 April to 30 September it closes at 18:00 with last entry at 17:00. It is closed on 25 and 26 December, and opens at 11:00 on 1 January.

    The Royal Mile

    Free

The street that links the castle to the palace, made of four streets in a row: Castlehill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street and the Canongate. It is lined with closes, small museums, churches and shops, and it is busy at all hours.

    2 h 30 visitAlways open

Walk it downhill from the castle to the palace, and dip into at least two closes off the main line, where the crowds drop away.

A public street, open at all hours. Individual shops, museums and closes keep their own times.

Go up around sunset in clear weather, and bring a layer, since the top is exposed to the wind.

The hill itself is open at all hours. Individual buildings keep their own times.

    The Real Mary King's Close

    Booking advised

A guided tour through a set of preserved streets and rooms under the Royal Mile, with costumed guides telling the stories of past residents. The tour lasts about an hour and goes down stairs in low light.

    1 h 30 visit (official site suggests 1 h)Open 9:30 am–10:30 pm · last entry 9:00 pmAdult ticket £28.50

Book an early or late slot in the day, when the groups are smaller and the tour feels less crowded.

Tours sell out, so book a time slot on the official page a few days or weeks ahead. The standard ticket allows changes up to four hours before the tour.

Opening hours change through the year. In the week of 5 October the site opens at 09:30 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends, and from 12 October it opens at 09:00 every day. Last entry is at 21:00. The calendar shows the attraction closed on 1 November 2026.
