St Giles' was founded in the twelfth century and has been rebuilt and extended many times. Its crown steeple is one of the signs of the Old Town skyline. Inside, the Thistle Chapel is the most intricate room, full of carved oak and heraldry. The windows and memorials trace several centuries of Scottish history.

Tickets and booking

Adult ticket £12. The adult ticket covers the cathedral floor, the Thistle Chapel and the guided tours, and is valid for 12 months. Under 16s go in free.

Getting there

Waverley station is about 10 minutes on foot, and the cathedral stands halfway down the Royal Mile.
