Greyfriars Kirkyard
One of the best known graveyards in Britain, beside the Old Town, with a statue of the dog Greyfriars Bobby at the gate. The monuments and the setting under the castle reward a short walk.

The kirkyard dates from the sixteenth century and holds the graves of many Edinburgh families. Its monuments are tall and carved, and the old church stands at one side. The statue of Greyfriars Bobby stands by the gate on the street outside. The location is quiet, though tour groups pass through at certain times of day.

It is about 10 minutes on foot from Waverley station, beside the National Museum of Scotland on George IV Bridge.
Tip
Visit in the late afternoon for the light on the stones, and look for the Covenanters' memorial.
