Dean Village grew around the mills on the Water of Leith, which ground grain for the city for centuries. The tall stone buildings and the bridge over the gorge are the best known views. The river path leads from here through the valley to Stockbridge in about 20 minutes. The walk is easy and mostly flat.

Getting there
It is about a 15 to 20 minute walk from the West End of Princes Street, down the hill to the river.
Tip
Visit early in the morning when the lanes are empty, and follow the river path downstream to Stockbridge.
