The gallery grew out of an art school in the 18th century and has held Michelangelo's David since 1873. The statue stands under a skylit tribune at the end of a hall lined with his unfinished Prisoners. The rest of the museum is smaller: Florentine paintings of the 13th to 15th centuries, a gallery of plaster models and a room of musical instruments.
