The tower was built in the early 16th century to guard the mouth of the Tagus and to serve as a ceremonial gateway for ships leaving Lisbon. It is smaller than most people expect. You go through a gun battery and a few stone rooms, then up a narrow spiral stair to the terrace, and the stair has two-way traffic, so it can feel slow.

What to look for

  • The rhinoceros carved under a corner turret
  • Rope and armillary sphere decoration on the walls
  • The gun battery at river level
  • The terrace with a view of the Tagus
