King Manuel I had the monastery begun in 1501, and it is the best-known work of the Manueline style, with ropes, shells and sea motifs cut into the stone. The visit has two parts. The church is a tall hall with slim columns that branch like palms, and the cloister is a two-storey square of carved arcades. Most people see the church first, then walk the cloister at their own pace.

What to look for

  • The carved south portal
  • Palm-like columns in the church nave
  • Vasco da Gama's tomb inside the church
  • Upper gallery of the cloister
