The monument was built in 1960 to mark 500 years since the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. It is shaped like a ship's prow, with Henry at the front and a line of navigators, monks and other figures behind him. A lift and stairs take you to a viewing platform at the top, and the pavement outside has a large map of the Portuguese sea routes.

Open every day. From October to February it closes at 18:00; from March to September it closes at 19:00. Closed 1 January, 1 May, 24, 25 and 31 December.

Tickets and booking

Adult ticket €10. The standard adult ticket on the official page covers the viewpoint, the exhibition and the film. Seeing the monument from the outside costs nothing.

Getting there

Take the CP train to Belém station and cross under the railway to the riverfront, a walk of about ten minutes.
