Louis IX had the chapel built in the 1240s to hold relics, including the Crown of Thorns. It has two levels: a low, painted lower chapel and an upper chapel where stained glass fills nearly every wall. The glass tells Bible stories in panels that you read from the bottom up. The visit is short, and the light depends on the day, so bright mornings suit it best.
What to look for
- The upper chapel and its walls of 13th-century glass
- The painted vault of the lower chapel
- The rose window at the west end
- The carved apostles on the columns
