According to tradition, the central lawn holds earth brought from the Holy Land. The sarcophagi were first placed on the lawn and later moved into the galleries, and the walls carry frescoes by Buffalmacco and later painters. Fire during the bombing of the Second World War damaged the frescoes, and large parts were detached from the walls so they could be restored. The galleries also hold sculptures and funeral monuments to well-known Pisans.
