The cathedral was completed in the last quarter of the 12th century and its builders reused many Roman stones. The nave is lined with granite columns from the island of Elba, and the wooden ceiling replaced the open roof timbers in the 17th century. A fire in 1595 destroyed much of the old decoration, and much of what you see inside was made afterwards. The visit is a walk down the nave and around the side aisles.
What to look for
- Granite columns of the nave
- Coffered wooden ceiling
- Marble facade with its arcades
